t̓išosəm – Tla’amin Nation is hosting a four-day mini-canoe journey called hošt taʔəčɩš təms gɩjɛ we are going to travel our territory which will reconnect Tla’amin, Klahoose and Homalco people to one another and to sacred places in the respective territories.

“Tribal journeys usually take us far down the coast” explains kespal (Drew Blaney), Tla’amin Culture and Heritage Manager “hošt taʔəčɩš təms gɩjɛ is special because we will be paddling the paths of our ancestors, in the heart of our territory.”

hošt taʔəčɩš təms gɩjɛ starts Tuesday August 13 with Tla’amin pullers leaving ƛaʔamɛn (Lund) at 8:00 AM.

Canoe Journey Schedule

  • August 13th: ƛaʔamɛn – toq’
  • August 14th: toq’ – ʔohp – toq’ 
  • August 15th: toq’ – p̓aq̓iʔaǰɩm – toq’ 
  • August 16th: toq’ – t̓išosəm

To conclude the mini-canoe journey Tla’amin Nation will host canoes and guests from its sister communities for two days of feasting, drumming and ceremony August 16-17 here in t̓išosəm.

“This journey is to honour our late jeh jeh Kyle Francis who loved our culture, our territory and our canoe family,” continued Blaney. “We invite our relatives to paddle in his honour and to come to t̓išosəm to witness the raising of his memorial pole.”

4:30 PM– Canoe welcome at waterfront
Elders are asked to witness the welcome at the beach
Please wear your regalia, bring your drums

5:30 PM – Welcome feast at Salish Centre and drumming
10:00 AM – Totem Pole Blessing for Kyle Francis at Cemetery
Lunch at Salish Centre

Help is needed.

With a couple hundred guests coming to the territory help is needed. If you can help with the following please reach out to Brianne.Louie@tn-bc.ca or Drew.Blaney@tn-bc.ca

  • Tla’amin homes with spare bedrooms to accommodate Elders visiting from neighbouring communities
  • People that are willing to open their homes for showers are asked to put a bright green poster board on their front windows indicating the home is open to showers. Tla’amin will provide the poster boards. 
  • Food for the feast on the 16th and breakfast on 17th.  Baked goods, desserts, easy breakfast items such as muffins, etc. Can be dropped off at the Salish Centre on the 16th.
