Our Culture

Culture & Language Department

We provide cultural learning opportunities that strengthen Tla’amin language, teachings, and identity. We support citizens and learners of all ages in connecting with Tla’amin Nation history, stories, teachings, lands, and ways of being. The department oversees cultural programming, supports Nation-to-Nation relationships, and ensures Tla’amin ways of doing things are at the centre of events, gatherings, capital projects, and public activities.

Department Summary

The Culture and Language Services Department preserves, strengthens, and shares the cultural knowledge, language, and heritage of the Tla’amin Nation. Our work ranges from daily cultural and language programming to supporting ceremonial protocols, maintaining cultural records and materials, and working closely with the Lands Department (link) on archaeology and heritage protection.

We offer programs, workshops, language learning opportunities, and public resources for citizens, caregivers, and community members. We also support off-Lands members through special programming, recordings, and digital resources.

Our team develops community resources, supports Elders’ involvement in cultural teachings, coordinates repatriation inquiries, assists with language requests, and provides guidance on cultural protocols for events, ceremonies, and intergovernmental relations.

We run weekly programming Monday through Friday at the Culture Campus. Our programs include cultural teachings, language sessions, seasonal activities, and workshops led by knowledge-keepers and staff. Current schedules will be posted here (link to community calendar?). Registration will be available online through PerfectMind/NuOrg (link here).

We run “urban cultural days” each year in Vancouver. Videos, language recordings, and cultural resources are available here (link). The Culture Department also has language CDs available for purchase. There are 2 sets available, one deals with the language and the other focuses on stories, history, and songs. The language packs are priced at $25/set.

The twice annual Tla’amin General Assembly offers cultural programs for Tla’amin Citizens.

The Tla’amin Culture Committee guides the work of the Culture and Language team offering protocol and programming advice on a quarterly basis.

On September 3, 2025, Tla’amin Executive Council passed a motion to formally adopt the 2025–2030 ʔayʔaǰuθəm Revitalization Strategy. This five-year plan sets a clear path for keeping ʔayʔaǰuθəm—the language that carries our teachings, stories, and identity—visible and present in every part of community life.
