Tla’amin food fish distribution – Friday, August 8

August 6th, 2025

New Fraser River sockeye projections support additional opening

An updated Fraser River sockeye forecast released Tuesday, August 5th has brought good news: Tla’amin will be able to hold a food fish distribution in t̓išosəm this Friday.

“Our Tla’amin ta-ow reminds us not to take more than we need. We were concerned about the early catch numbers and unsure if the run was strong enough to support our fishery,” said Lands and Resources Housepost Callum Galligos. “The updated projections are very good, and we’re happy and thankful to staff who made this distribution come together quickly.”

Tla’amin anticipates that households with 1 Tla’amin citizen will receive 5 fish, while households with more than 1 citizen will receive 10 fish. These numbers are being verified as we receive updates from the water and are subject to change.

Delivery of frozen sockeye sides will be organized for Vancouver, Victoria, and Nanaimo for citizens at a future date, so stay tuned.

Tla’amin’s total food and ceremonial catch for Fraser River sockeye is just over 6,400 fish and we have a confirmed catch of 3000 so far with more fishing to come this week. Some of this allocation will be set aside for community needs such as funerals and Nation events.

Please have totes and ice ready on Friday, delivery starts at 9:00 AM. Trucks will be dispatched with allocation numbers per household; these numbers are firm and non-negotiable so please don’t give the delivery staff a hard time. All fish guts must be returned to the ocean following Tla’amin protocol. Please do not dispose of guts in the bush, river, or off the bridge as it will attract bears to the village.
