(Be ready – Strong wind tonight)

November 19, 2024

Tla’amin lands are on the outer edge of what news media is calling a “bomb cyclone” weather system. While that may sound scary, Tla’amin people are used to, and know how to handle, tough weather.

Tla’amin Fire Chief Byron Harry says “We encourage people to check in on your Elders and neighbours as we always have.  If possible, plan to stay home tonight, roads may be closed and power lines may be down. If you encounter a downed powerline stay 10 meters away and call 911.  Our emergency responders are prepared and on standby should we run into any problems.”

Tla’amin Nation will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates on the members-only Facebook page should the situation worsen or be prolonged.  Here are a few tips to stay safe and protect your family and community.

  1. Secure “Flying Objects”: Trampolines, boats, garbage cans, outdoor toys, tarps and other belongings can quickly become dangerous flying objects. Please do a yard walk-through and secure all potential “flying objects.”  Just because it hasn’t blown away yet doesn’t mean it won’t.
  • Be ready for power outages: A few gentle reminders to make sure you have extra food & water in case the power goes out for a while. Charge your health and other devices. Have a flashlight and fresh batteries on hand.
  • Fume and flame management: Exercise care with candles and please do not use gas cook stoves and generators indoors. Noxious fumes are a hazard.
  • Bring your pets inside: Storms of this magnitude are hard for our four-legged kin. Please consider bringing your pets inside for the night.
  • High tides are forecast: An over 5-meter-high tide is expected tomorrow morning, this coupled with high winds and waves makes it extra important to secure any boats or gear down near the water.
