The Tla’amin Nation Recreation Department offers accessible programs for children, youth, adults, and Elders. Our work is guided by Tla’amin Nation teachings ʔəms taʔow. We aim to create welcoming spaces where people can be active, connect, and feel supported.

Services We Offer

We partner with Culture, Education, ISCD, and other Tla’amin Nation departments to make sure our programs are safe, age-appropriate, and responsive to community needs. From after-school care and youth drop-ins to adult fitness, Elder wellness, and community events, our goal is to reduce barriers and support healthy living.

Our team includes local staff who bring a range of experience, including language, land-based learning, and traditional practices. We continue to grow our services through partnerships and the ongoing development of the Recreation Master Plan.

Youth Programs

We offer a variety of free cultural, recreational, and seasonal programs for children ages 5–12.

The Youth Drop-In Program runs on Thursday and Friday evenings and provides a safe, supportive space with activities, mentorship, and social connection. All youth programs incorporate traditional teachings, mentorship from local knowledge keepers, and land-based learning opportunities. Youth are contacted about youth programs using SMS text alerts, Snapchat, and other communication tools based on community preferences. If you would like to provide feedback or suggest additional methods for engagement, please contact us.

In August 2024, Executive Council unanimously approved the č ̓ ɛč ̓ ɛgatštəm ʔəms čičuy (“helping to support our kids”) Recreation Reimbursement Program, providing financial support for Tla’amin children and youth aged 0–18 to participate in sports and recreation. The policy was shaped by community feedback and applies equally to on- and off-land citizens.

Under the policy, the maximum annual allowances for reimbursement are $300 CAD for children 0 to 6 years and $1,000 CAD for children 7-18 years old.

The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis until the budget is exhausted. Secondary costs such as uniform, costumes, travel or equipment are the participant’s responsibility.

č̓ɛč̓ɛgatštəm ʔəms čičuy is aligned with Goal’s 10 and 12 of the Comprehensive Nation Plan to take care of Tla’amin čičuy, and it fulfills a commitment to develop and implement comprehensive recreation supports.
