Frequently Asked Questions
You may be eligible for Social Assistance if you:
- ordinarily reside on Tla’amin lands;
- are eligible for basic or special financial assistance as confirmed by an assessment of your employability, family composition, and household financial resources; and
- have no other source of funding to meet basic needs and therefore require income support.
The assessment of your eligibility is to confirm that you:
- are out of work or not earning enough to meet your basic needs;
- are waiting for other sources of money to arrive;
- can’t work at all; or
- are experiencing hardship and urgently need food, shelter or medical attention; and
- have not applied for and do not receive social assistance or living supports from any other source.
In order to be eligible, you must provide all information necessary to confirm the eligibility requirements were met and that the information provided in their application is accurate.
In general, you will need to provide details about your current situation, income and assets. Be ready to give information, such as:
- Identification for you and your family: two for each adult (one photo/one other) and one for each child:
- Status card OR Tla’amin Citizen card
- Birth Certificate
- BC Service Card
- BCID/Driver’s license
- Verification of income: You must demonstrate your last income has been exhausted, and you must apply for EI before applying for income assistance:
- Current two-month bank statement (all accounts: personal and business)
- Income tax statement (Call 1-800-959-8281)
- Canada Child Benefit Notice (Call 1-800-387-1193)
- Pension and/or WCB statement showing monthly rate
- EI statement per adult showing weekly rate, start date, and end date (print copy from your online account)
- Wages/earnings for full month
- Employment status and/or Record of Employment
- Any income such as honorariums, child support, gambling wins, or other living supports
- Other: ______________________________ (direct deposit form)
- Shelter documents:
- Tla’amin tenancy agreement (Contact Housing) List everyone living in the home, including children

- Mortgage document showing: Bank and mortgage number, name, start and end date, monthly payments and rates
- Private home: Tla’amin Nation Lands Registry and Rental Agreement
- Medical documents:
- NP or Doctor’s dietary note: medical condition and special diet

An assessment could take a couple of weeks. If your application is complete and approved, you can expect to receive your first payment within a few business days of the approval.
Yes. In order to keep your file active, you are required to submit your renewal form by mid-month.
Yes. You are required to report all sources of income you receive, and let us know if it changes from month to month. If in doubt, please talk to us.
Depending on your eligibility, income assistance provides monthly payments, and covers the actual costs for the following items:
- Rent
- Hydro
- One phone
Yes. Income Assistance rates are determined by who lives in the household, regardless of their tenancy status.
Yes. Your Income Assistance may be paused while you access other living supports.

If you receive an honorarium for volunteering with the Nation, your Income Assistance will not be affected.
